Gov Newsom Orders New DNA Tests In 1983 California Murders

California Governor Gavin Newsom has ordered DNA testing on evidence that death-row inmate Kevin Cooper says will he did not kill Doug and Peggy Ryen, their-year-old daughter Jessica, and 11-year-old neighbor boy Christopher Hughes some 35 years ago in Chino Hills.

Newsom issued an executive order on Friday for the testing of hair, blood and fingernail scrapings from the victims and on a green button using the most modern DNA technology.

Kevin Cooper claims he was framed for the 1983 killings and insists the testing will prove he is right.

Former Governor Jerry Brown ordered testing in 2018 of four pieces of evidence and picked a former judge to oversee the case.

Prosecutors insists prior tests prove Cooper is guilty.

The case attracted national interest after U.S. Senator Kamala Harris and television personality Kim Kardashian urged officials to allow the new DNA testing.
