The Mavericks surf competition is officially off for this season. The window to hold the big wave contest closed on Sunday.
To hold the competition, the World Surf League requires a forecast for consistent 40-foot waves over a full day off the San Mateo County coast, which only happens in the winter. Conditions came closest in mid-December, but it was deemed too stormy and unsafe.
Adding to the disappointment, this would have been the first year women surfers would have been invited and would have shared equally in the prize money.
