CA Lawmaker Aims to Make College More Affordable For Undocumented Students

A new bill being considered in the California Legislature is another effort to provide greater accessibility to higher education for so-called Dreamers. The measure, authored by Democratic Assemblyman Miguel Santiago of Los Angeles, would allow more students living in the country illegally to attend state colleges and universities at a lower cost by making them eligible access to in-state tuition.

Santiago's bill received strong support on Tuesday in the Assembly Higher Education Committee.

"We want to make sure that all California students have access to a college education they can afford, regardless of their legal status," Santiago said. "Our in-state tuition rates should be more accessible to those who play such a vital role in developing our culture and strengthening our economy."

Santiago believes that by making it easier to attend college by making it more more affordable, his bill will will make it easier for students to earn their degrees and help carry California's workforce into 21st century.
