California Suing Trump Admin To Keep Money For High Speed Rail

The State of California has filed suit against the Trump administration in an effort to hold on to nearly a billion federal dollars meant for high speed rail. The Federal Railroad Administration announced last week it would not give California the money set aside by Congress almost ten years ago, claiming that the state has not met certain guidelines.

"The Trump Administration should be expanding access to care, not opening the door to limitless denials of care for vulnerable patients and communities," said CalifornAttorney General Xavier Becerra. "This notion of licensing the discriminate refusal of care to patients smacks of a century-old, bigoted mindset. This is 2019 not 1920. California won’t backslide."

State officials said on Tuesday that the also plan to file for a temporary restraining order blocking President Trump from putting the the money into any other projects. Governor Gavin Newsom last week described the administration's move as illegal, and he also said it was nothing more than political payback for for the state's stance on immigration.

The state has run into significant cost overruns, construction delays, and changes to plan for a high-speed rail line linking Los Angeles and San Francisco that sold to voters during Governor Jerry Brown's final years in office.

The state has already spent $2.5 billion in federal funding, and the Trump administration has also threatened to ask for that money back.
