Second Proof Of Residency Needed In California For REAL IDs, DMV To Help

The Department of Motor Vehicles is offering to help the millions of Californians who got their REAL IDs back when only one proof of residency was needed. DMV spokesman Jaime Garza said on Thursday that if a resident is already in the system, the DMV will mail out a document, and all they will have to do is fill-it out and send it back.

"They'll simply need to verify their address by checking a box, sign and date the document, and the mail it back to the DMV in the prepaid envelope that we have provided."

More than three-million REAL ID holders are being notified they need at least one piece of proof of residency. If people take advantage of the mail-in form, they will not have to go back to a field office.

With this move the DMV said it is now in compliance with federal requirements for the Real ID driver licenses or identification cards. The state says it received notification of approval by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on Wednesday.

"California has been working toward compliance for a long time, and it is a testament to the hard work of many that this day has arrived," said Kathleen Webb, acting director of the DMV. "We thank the Department of Homeland Security for its approval as we work to prepare Californians for the new federal identification requirements that begin October 2020."
