Second World War Navajo Code Talker Dies

The Navajo Nation has confirmed the death in Arizona of another World War Two Navajo Code Talker. Officials say William Tully Brown died Tuesday at the age of 96.

Brown was born in Black Mountain in 1922, he enlisted with the United States Marine Corps in 1944, and he was honorably discharged in 1946, receiving several medals for his service.

Hundreds of Navajos served in the Marines during the war as Code Talkers. They used a code based on their native language, so messages could not be understood by the Japanese military.

He is the third Code Talker to pass away in the past month.

There are five code talkers still alive at this point.

Officials say a viewing and funeral service will be held for Brown on Thursday in St. Michaels, Arizona.
