California Legislature Approves New Budget

The California Senate and the Assembly have approved a $214.8 billion budget for the coming fiscal year. The spending plan next goes to Governor Gavin Newsom's desk.

The budget includes money for taxpayer-funded health insurance coverage of low-income adults between the ages of 19 and 25 who are living in the country illegally. It also provide $2.4 billion for the state's housing and homelessness crisis. There is more money in the budget for Cal Fire following the most devastating wildfire season in state history.

Democratic Senate leader Toni Atkins said Thursday that this is the best state budget in 20 years. She also said it's a "luxury" to have as much revenue to spend as lawmakers do with extra money set aside for a rainy day.

Newsom now is on the clock and has 12 days to look over and sign the budget bill. It is likely he'll sign it.
