Lawsuit Accuses Sutter Of Sharing Private Patient Information

A new lawsuit filed this week accuses Sutter Health of sharing the medical information of the two plantiffs who are identified as Jane Doe 1 and Jane Doe 2. The sharing with third-party companies like Facebook and Google was done without the knowledge of the plantiffs, according to the class-action suit . The complaint alleges that Sutter's website is not secure, which allows those companies to access data that can be identified as a patient's medical information.

Attorneys with Kiesel Law in Beverly Hills and Simmons Hanly Conroy in New York filed the suit, and they said health care provider's website uses coded website data that is intended to help advertisers, but is also disclosing confidential details that allow companies to target the plantiffs with internet advertising.

That information is allegedly available on the Sutter website despite promises of privacy. The suit also accuses Sutter of violating California’s Confidentiality of Medical Information Act, the state Invastion of Privacy Act, and the Unfair Competition Law.

Sutter spokeswoman Amy Thoma Tan said they have not yet received the official complaint, and that they take informational security very seriously.
