Governor Newsom Predicts Republicans Headed For "The Waste Bin Of History"

Governor Gavin Newsom makes some very provocative statements about the future of the Republican Party in a newly published article. Newsom also pulls no punches while sharing his thoughts about President Donald Trump.

Newsom compares America in 2019 to California in the 1990s in an interview with POLITICO. "The xenophobia, the nativism, the fear of 'the other.' Scapegoating. Talking down or past people. The hysteria. And so, we're not going to put up with that. We are going to push back," Newsom says.

He goes on to say that because they are choosing to follow President Trump's lead today's crop of Republicans nationally "are into the politics of what California was into in the 1990s, and they’ll go the same direction — into the waste bin of history, the way Republicans of the '90s have gone. That's exactly what will happen to this crop of national Republicans."

Newsom's reference to California Republicans of '90s centers on divisive issues like the 1994 attempt to create a citizenship screening program. Proposition 187, which was also known as the "Save Our State" initiative, also prohibited illegal immigrants from getting non-emergency medical care, attending public schools, and receiving state services. The California Legislative Analyst's Office estimated that the measure would save the state about $200 million per year.

The day after the proposition was approved by the voters in the November general election it was challenged in court. Opponents first received a temporary injunction from a federal judge and then permanent ban on the new law pending trial. By 1997 the state dropped legal challenges to those rulings.

Jessica Patterson, who is the new chairwoman of the California Republican party, spoke with News 93.1 KFBK afternoon news anchor Kitty O'Neal about Newsom's prediction.

The Governor also tells POLITICO that Democrats will own the future by focusing on giving people universal health care including all undocumented immigrants. California is heading in that direction with new state budget proposal that contains funding for an expansion of MediCal to include coverage for low-income illegal immigrants between the ages of 19 and 25.

"We're going to get it," says Newsom of government-run health care for all. "We're committed to universal health care. Universal health care means everybody. We will lead a massive expansion of health care, and that's a major deviation from the past."

Some political experts believe Newsom's comments are meant to better position him with the far left for a run at national office as soon as 2024.
