New Advances In Dialysis Care Giving Sufferers More Hope

An expert on kidney disease is offering new hope for people who are suffering from the ailment. Doctor Martin Schreiber says treatment at your home instead of a clinic is becoming more common.

"Home dialysis represents the procedure that allows patients to do the dialysis in their home as opposed to patients having to travel to dialysis units," Schreiber said.

The catch is that you'll need equipment in your home, but that's often something covered by private insurance and Medicare.

"There are approximately 31-million U.S. adults between the ages of 20-and-older who have kidney disease," he added. "That represents about 15-percent of the adult population."

The major causes are diabetes and high blood pressure.

"Those two causes alone account for almost two-thirds of all cases of chronic kidney disease."
