Sac City Council Approves Rent Control Measure

The City of Sacramento has a new rent control measure that aims to prevent steep rent increases and limit evictions of certain renters. The City Council approved the Tenant Protection and Relief Act Tuesday night which takes effect in 30 days.

The measure will limit rent increases to no more than six-percent each year plus inflation with a cap at ten-percent. The law also prohibits tenants from being evicted without notice if they have lived in the unit for over a year. The ordinance will be in effect for five years.

Opponents are claiming the law will make Sacramento less attractive to investors and are calling for even stricter rent control regulations. Property owners say they will be affected by the new measure and will push landlords to leave the market altogether.

Mayor Darrell Steinberg says the compromise isn't perfect, but it will help people.
