Missing Hiker's Body Recovered From Trinity Alps

Authorities in Northern California say after a three day search, crews found the body of a missing hiker who appeared to have fallen to his death. The Trinity County Sheriff's Office said Sunday, crews recovered 34-year-old Daniel Komins' body shortly after a California Highway Patrol helicopter located a backpack off a trail. Komins' unoccupied vehicle was located near a Trinity County trail head on the evening of Wednesday, August 14. Relatives of Komins told authorities that he left for the hike on August 10 and was reported missing five days after he was supposed to return home.

Initial investigations report that the hiker may have fallen asleep in the steep and rocky terrain. Komins was a volunteer firefighter with Blue Lake Fire Department in Humboldt County and a trained emergency medical technician. As an experienced hiker, he had plenty of food, water, and backpacking supplies and carried a cell phone and GPS device.

The county sheriff's office reported that the search consisted of twelve teams of search crews, forty individual ground searchers, and several helicopter teams. His remains were flown out of the Trinity Alps via helicopter Sunday.
