New Rental Regulations Approved By Rocklin City Council

The Rocklin City Council is imposing new rental regulations, after concerns were raised about violence and loud parties at vacation rentals.

The Council recently passed an ordinance that puts limits on short-term rental properties in the city. It requires that type of rental agreement to be limited to a total of 90 days per year. The new rules will require property owners to apply for a permit from the City before legally being allowed to rent their home to companies such as Airbnb or Vrbo.

This ordinance comes just a couple of months after two people were shot during a house party on Grove Street in Rocklin. While the shooting took place in Elk Grove, Sierra College football player Chancelor Fields-Colbert was killed at an Airbnb house party last month.

Council members have expressed doubt that people will comply with the regulations, but they believe they are at least giving police another tool to control problems resulting from the practice.

Councilwoman Jill Gayaldo says she doesn't believe this is pervasive problem in Rocklin, but she does reportedly support the idea of some control over the short-term rentals. She noted at a recent council meeting that online searches currently showed only a few Airbnb or Vrbo listings.

Similar restrictions exist in Sacramento and Roseville. Rocklin officials say their ordinance will mostly likely go into effect at the end of September.
