Veteran Carries Fellow Marine Who Lost His Legs in Combat Up Utah Mountain

John Nelson and Johnathon Blank served in the Marine Corps in Afghanistan together and still love to go hiking, even though one of them lost his legs in combat. Nelson recently carried Blank, who weighs 135 pounds, on his back for 14.3 miles to the top of a mountain in Utah.

Blank, who lost his legs when an IED detonated next to him in October 2010, hopes their story can inspire others to do something they might think is impossible. “Not only have I lived through this, but we’re also special operations guys,” Blank said. “We can do anything. We can maybe instill that mindset into other people.”

On Veteran's Day, Blank and Nelson are planning to hike Mount Whitney, which is the tallest mountain in California at more than 14,500 feet.
