Sacramento chef and restaurateur Biba Caggiano has died at the age of 82. The Sacramento Bee is reporting the local legend, who brought wide notoriety to the Capital City in the culinary world, passed away early this morning at her home in East Sacramento.

Caggiano came to Sacramento in 1969, and at the time the then-sleepy government city was lacking in authentic Italian food. Biba opened her eponymous restaurant in 1986, and it quickly became one of the most prominent spots in the city, being awarded awards both locally and on a wider basis.

Caggiano also hosted several cooking shows and wrote nine cookbooks, selling hundreds of thousands of copies. She is survived by her husband, two daughters, their husbands, and six grandchildren.
