California Congresswoman Katie Hill is stepping down after allegations about a consensual, sexual relationship with a campaign staffer that has also raised questions about whether women are held to higher standards in public life than their male counterparts.
Hill announced her resignation Sunday following the publication of explicit photos that outed the relationship with the female aide. The Democrat She describes the photos as "revenge porn" and vows to fight back in an effort to prevent women and girls from staying out of politics due to fear of being held to a tougher standard than male politicians.
Hill said in a video statement that she is the victim of a smear campaign perpetrated by her "abusive husband" and "hateful political operatives." She also blamed "right wing media and Republican opponents" who she claimed have given her husband a platform.
Hill also listed what she characterized as her top accomplishments while in office.
While the House Ethics Committee is investigating an allegation that Hill engaged in an affair with a male congressional adviser, she is denying it happened.
Fellow Californian and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says it would be impossible for Hill to continue representing the state's 25th District under the circumstances.
The photos that helped to end Hill's career were published by The Daily Mail. Hill's attorney has demanded the publication take down the photos from it's website.
