Amgen Tour Of California On Hiatus For 2020

The Amgen Tour of California is hitting the brakes. Officials with AEG Sports tweeted Tuesday afternoon that they are putting the event on hiatus for 2020. "Thank you, fans. It’s been an amazing 14 years," they wrote in the tweet. The race has reportedly contributed well over $3 billion to the state's economy during that time.

The Amgen TOC first came to the state 14 years ago and has attracted cyclists from around the world each year since. Organizers say professional cycling is popular globally, but it has become a financial challenge to mount the race over the years.

Amgen TOC officials are leaving the door open for a 2021 return if they can reshape their business model.

Sacramento hosted Stage 1 of the men's race this year.
