Monterey County Jail Escapees Recaptured

Two men who were awaiting trial in the Monterey County on murder charges and managed to escape from the jail in Salinas last Sunday have been recaptured.

Monterey County Sheriff's Office Capt. John Thornburg said 20-year-old Jonathan Salazar and 21-year-old Santos Fonseca were caught Wednesday by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents as they tried to enter the United States from Mexico.

Thornburg added that authorities received a tip that the pair had been spotted on the Mexican side of the border near San Diego, and federal officials were alerted.

Both Salazar and Fonseca had been in custody since 2018 and were awaiting trial on murder counts and "numerous other felony charges" in unrelated cases.
