CA Insurance Commissioner Stops Home Policy Cancellations In Wildfire Zones

California's insurance commissioner is telling insurance companies to stop cancelling homeowner policies in areas hit by wildfires this year. Ricardo Lara issued the order Thursday, and said it's the result of new legislation that gives him the authority to impose a one-year moratorium on any policy cancellations in or near wildfire zones.

The move potentially protects more than 800,000 policy holders with property near any of this year's 16 wildfires statewide. One of those fires, October's Kincade Fire, affected about 140,000 people living near in northern Sonoma County.
