Proposed CA Law Would Force Sharing Of Your Personal Info If Using DoorDash

A bill in the California Assembly known as the "Fair Food Delivery Act" would require food delivery app services to share your contact information with the restaurants filling your order. That information would include your email address, phone number, and delivery address.

"We need to level the playing field for mom-and-pop restaurants that are being taken advantage of by big tech," Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, who authored the bill, said. "Restaurants shouldn't fear losing their customers when they don't agree to the conditions of some multi-million dollar food delivery app. This bill will put the power back in the hands of small business owners in California."

Gonzalez says drivers for app services, like DoorDash, Grub Hub, Postmates, and Uber Eats, often pick up food from several restaurants at a time, which means there is no guarantee your order will get you in a timely manner. She believes if the order takes longer than expected, the food gets cold or even becomes unsafe to eat, then the restaurant's reputation could be tarnished.

"Technology giants aggressively entering the food service space-- whether deliberately or not-- are eroding the customer’s relationship with the restaurant," said California Restaurant Association CEO and President Jot Condie in a written statement.

Gonzalez also claims that food delivery apps take as much as 30 percent of sales from restaurants, 60 percent of which are owned by people of color in California.

The Assemblywoman also authored the bill, AB-5, which requires businesses to classify more contract workers as employees and provide them with benefits.
