Sacramento Girl Makes COVID-19 Masks For California Highway Patrol Officers

A Sacramento area girl was challenged by her teachers to come up with a community service project, and she almost immediately thought about helping the California Highway Patrol to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. Sixth-grader Kendra Bird attends Our Lady of Assumption School in Carmichael, and she quickly went to work creating masks for the men and women at the CHP office where her uncle works.

Three layers of 100 percent cotton material were sewn together for the body of each mask with a printed pattern on one side and a solid color on the other. The masks had to be reversible, since the officers are only allowed to wear the solid colors while in public, according to Kendra.

Each mask also contains a pocket for an MPR 2800 filter and comes with three filters. A simple pipe clear was sewn into the masks to allow the officer to mold them over their noses for a perfect fit that helps to keep air from getting past the edges.

On Tuesday, Kendra made her presentation to the CHP officers, and the gift seemed to be greatly appreciated. She also made masks for some of her neighbors.
