Christopher Columbus Statue Removed From California State Capitol

Crews have been working on removing the Christopher Columbus statue inside the California State Capitol, Tuesday morning.

The statue has been in the building since 1883, but it was agreed by Democratic members of the Assembly that it would be removed last month.

Members of the California Senate Republican Caucus recently signed on to a letter urging members of the Joint Rules Committee to keep the sculpture.

"Christopher Columbus is a deeply polarizing historical figure given the deadly impact his arrival in this hemisphere had on indigenous populations," Democrats said in a statement of their own last month. "The continued presence of this statue in California’s Capitol, is completely out of place today. It will be removed."

The Columbus statue was eventually taken by truck to the California Statewide Museum Collections Center at Sacramento's McClellan Airport for storage. Reportedly it will be returned to the family of the donor, though lawmakers have not commented on that report.

This comes just days after demonstrators tore down the Junipero Serra statue and vandalized the El Soldado statue at the Capitol.

A statue of John Sutter was taken down in Sacramento last month.
