Sac Sheriff's Dept Releases Rancho Cordova Officer Involved Shooting Video

The Sacramento Sheriff's Department on Friday released online video of an officer involved shooting in Rancho Cordova on September 5th that left a man injured. The video is a collection security camera footage from businesses in the 10400 block of Investment Circle as well as law enforcement dash and body cameras.

The suspect, 22-year-old Miguel Hernandez, was treated for his injuries and subsequently released from a local hospital. He was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on charges related to pointing a firearm at a peace officer, but he has since been released.

The shooting happened after a 9-1-1 call about a man who allegedly had vandalized a fence and stolen a water hose from a business on Investment Circle. The caller said the man to have a toy gun in his waistband.

When the first deputies arrived, they said they saw a man matching the caller's description walking toward them, and they immediately began giving him commands that he ignored. The at one point he laid down without being ordered to do so, then he suddenly stood up and ran away. As he ran, the video shows the man raising his hand and pointing at them something that deputies assumed was a firearm.

The man eventually rounded a corner outside a nearby business and once again pointed the object at deputies before disappearing from sight for a few moments. When a deputy spotted him later, the man pointed the suspected gun at him. In response, the deputy fired his weapon at the man but missed.

Other deputies caught up to the man and continued to shout at him to drop "the gun," but he instead pointed the suspected firearm directly at deputies. Four deputies fired their weapons all at once and hit the man, who then dropped to the ground.

An inspection of the object being held by the man showed it to be an ignition timing gun that investigators said was altered to look like a firearm.

So far, no motive for what happened has been announced.
