Governor Newsom Signs Bills To Reform Racial, Criminal Justice And Policing

Governor Gavin Newsom on Wednesday signed a series of bills backers and his administration believe will advance the state's efforts to address the impacts of racism and establish policing and juvenile justice reforms in California.

The policing bill requires independent, accountable, and transparent oversight of police officer-involved shootings of unarmed persons.

Newsom said he hopes that the changes being made in California will inspire the rest of the country. He also quoted historical Greek Statesman Pericles in saying, "we do not imitate, for we are a model for the world."

The Governor also signed legislation strengthening consumer financial protections for Californians.
