San Francisco Bans Smoking Tobacco In Apartments, But They Say Pot is Okay

San Francisco is about to become the largest U.S. city to outlaw smoking tobacco in apartments, but smoking cannabis isn't a problem. Supervisors voted ten-to-one on Tuesday to approve an ordinance that bans smoking cigarettes in apartment buildings with three or more units. However, they also voted eight-to-three to exclude cannabis from the ban. The majority argued that it's illegal to smoke pot in public places, so banning the practice inside apartments would take away the only legal option for people who want to enjoy a joint where they live.

The San Francisco health department will be responsible for enforcing the new tobacco smoke law, and their goal will be to educate offenders first effort, then they'll have the option of issuing fines up to $1,000 a day for repeat violations.
