Governor Gavin Newsom has already picked someone to be the new top elections official in California.
Newsom nominated Democratic Assembly member Shirley Weber Tuesday after he appointed Alex Padilla for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. Weber would become the first Black secretary of state in California history.
