California Supreme Court To Decide Future Of Bail Bond System

The California Supreme Court is set to hear arguments in a historic case that will decide the future of the cash bail system in the state. Founder and Executive Director of the Prosecutors Alliance Cristine Soto DeBerry says the decision will likely lead to more refinement of the system.

In the Humphrey case, judges will be looking into a defendant's ability to pay as a factor of bailing out. DeBerry says she believes the current system prioritizes wealth over risk, but Topo Padilla, president of Golden State Bail Agents Association, says Californians have already weighed in through last year's ballot measure to keep it intact. A decision is expected within the next 90 days.
