Sac County Deputy, K-9 Killed In Cal Expo Shooting

Sac County deputy and K-9 killed in Cal Expo shooting following a car chase Monday night.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office reports that an unidentified suspect also died at the scene. Sheriff Scott Jones told reporters around 10 p.m. on Monday two deputies stopped a driver in the area of Arden Way and Morse Avenue, and as they were trying to identify him, the man in his mid-40s drove away.

A short pursuit ended when the driver crashed in a Cal Expo parking lot, and multiple deputies responded to the scene where the man refused to leave his car. A K-9 was sent shortly after, and was fatally shot by the suspect. In an exchange of gunfire, two K-9 deputies and the driver were shot. One of the sheriff’s deputies who was shot was hospitalized but later died - the other is reported to be in stable condition.

Jones confirms the officer was a six-year veteran of the department, and leaves behind a wife and an infant child.
