GOP Senators Vote Against Impeachment Trial

Republican senators are voting against an impeachment trial for former President Donald Trump.

Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky put forward a motion on Tuesday objecting to the upcoming trial. He claimed the Constitution doesn't provide for the impeachment of former presidents. It was blocked by Democrats and five Republicans in a 55-45 vote. Democrats need support from at least 17 Republican senators to convict Trump on the impeachment charge that he incited the deadly Capitol riot on January 6th. The trial will begin the week of February 8th.
