There's a brand new secretary of state in California.
Dr. Shirley Weber has been confirmed by the state Senate to become California's top elections official, approved by a unanimous vote. The former Assemblywoman was first elected to the legislature in 2012 and chaired the Assembly Budget Committee and the Assembly Committee on Elections. Prior to that, she taught Africana Studies at San Diego State University for four decades. Weber replaces Alex Padilla, who is now the junior Senator from California in the U.S. Senate.
Governor Gavin Newsom is expected to swear in California's new Secretary of State today.
