Hwy 1 Collapse Continues To Grows As Crews Evaluate Damage

Caltrans work crews in Central California are busy trying to remove mud and debris near a section of scenic Highway 1 that washed away, creating a 150-foot hole in the roadway near Big Sur. The section that collapsed from powerful rain storms in Monterey County last week is about 30 miles south of a famous bridge featured in HBO's "Big Little Lies." Drone footage shows a huge chunk of both the northbound and southbound lanes are missing, with no estimate as to when the road will reopen. The damage is extensive, but not as bad as a landslide in 2017 that cut off tourist traffic for more than a year. Caltrans crews are working now to stabilize damaged sections of Highway 1 in 60 different places.
