Lawmaker Threatens Legal Action Against Padilla's $35Mil Contract

Republican lawmaker Kevin Kiley says an attempt by the California Legislature to pay out a $35 million contract secured by former Secretary of State Alex Padilla is a violation of California's constitution.

Padilla used federal CARES Act money to hire a firm closely tied to the Biden campaign for voter outreach, but State Treasurer Betty Yee refused to pay it. Now, Democrats and Governor Newsom are pushing for the money to come out of the state budget. Padilla was recently appointed by Newsom to fill the Senate seat left vacant by Vice President Kamala Harris.
