Former San Diego Mayor and Republican candidate for governor Kevin Faulconer is taking aim at California Governor Gavin Newsom for failing to reopen schools amid the pandemic. With the California Department of Education as a backdrop, Faulconer went on the offensive against the Democratic Party and Newsom while making a case that he will be a better leader for the Golden State. A recent poll from the Public Policy Institute of California found that a slim majority of voters, 52%, still approve of Newsom's job performance, but that number has dropped from 60% in September 2020. Former Governor Gray Davis was recalled in 2003 and succeeded in office by Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger.
