Teacher Suspended For Racist Gestures On Zoom Class

A teacher is on administrative leave in Sacramento after making racist gestures during a virtual Zoom class.

Nicole Burkett is a Spanish teacher at Grant Union High School. Yesterday, she was suspended for slanting her eyes, explaining how to distinguish different types of Asian-Americans. She says if eyes slant upward they're Chinese, downward they're Japanese, and she doesn't know if they are slanted straight back. The scene was captured through photos by one of her students. The Twin Rivers Unified School Board calls Burkett's actions derogatory and racist. Investigations are underway to determine if further punishment will be necessary.
