Signatures are currently being verified in the recall effort against California Governor Gavin Newsom.
Over the weekend, the Secretary of State's office said Rescue California's Newsom recall petition drive had almost 1,200,000 confirmed signers of the 1,500,000 required to make the ballot. The group turned over more than 2 million signatures on the collection deadline last week, with Amador County showing the highest submitted signatures per voter. It could take several weeks for elections officials to verify the signatures as authentic.
If the signatures are verified, an election for voters to decide whether to remove the governor and who on a list of replacement candidates would replace him, could be held this year.
