DHS to Extend Real-ID Requirement for Air Travelers

The Department of Homeland Security is delaying the Real-ID requirement for air travelers until 2023.

The deadline was supposed to be October 1st, but officials tell NBC News it will be extended to May 3rd, 2023. Real ID compliant cards are issued after a thorough check of an applicant's identification, with the new issued licenses having a star on the upper right-hand corner. The requirement has been delayed repeatedly over the past decade because states were not prepared for the new rules and now because of COVID-19.

According to NBC News, only 43% of all state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards are Real ID-compliant.
