The Sacramento Bee is suing the city of Sacramento.
The Sacramento Bee is demanding the City release information from a 2018 police-involved fatal shooting of a Black man. Nineteen-year-old Darell Richards was shot-and-killed by Sacramento police officers after finding him hiding under a stairwell holding a knife and pellet gun. Controversy sparked when released body-cam footage didn't back up an officer's claim that Richards pointed the gun at them, as well as Richards showing signs of mental health issues.
Now, the Bee is filing a lawsuit against the City for failing to release documents related to the use-of-force incident, a violation of the Right to Know Act passed by state legislators in 2018.
