Evictions continue in the Sacramento area even with legal tenant protections.
The Sacramento Bee analyzed data from the County Sheriff's Office and found around 600 renters were evicted since March 2020. Governor Newsom signed a bill in August though, protecting tenants from evictions due to "COVID-19-related financial distress" so long as they submit a declaration form.
Some failed to do that, others were evicted for subletting, and all were locked out of their home by the Sheriff. Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg said he would favor an ordinance to keep renters from "being unfairly evicted."
