House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is calling for a "diplomatic boycott" of next year's Winter Olympics in Beijing.
Pelosi told Congress’s Human Rights Commission and Congressional-Executive Commission on China during a hearing, "We cannot proceed as if nothing is wrong about the Olympics going to China." She slammed Beijing's human rights record and accused China of "genocide." Pelosi says athletes should still be allowed to compete, but said world leaders and members of royalty should stay home.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken in March, also denounced China’s alleged human rights abuses, saying the "the trend lines on human rights continue to move in the wrong direction," according to The Hill. Different human rights groups told The Associated Press that they are working toward a complete boycott of the Beijing Winter Games.
