Inmate Firefighter Crashes Fire Truck During Attempted Escape

An inmate firefighter is back behind bars after stealing a firetruck while he was on duty, just outside Sacramento in the small community of Shingle Springs. An inmate fire crew was putting out a vegetation fire shortly before 1:00 a.m. on Monday when one of them allegedly hopped into the fire truck and took off. He drove through a fence, hitting another truck from a nearby business. Cal Fire told KCRA-TV the wayward inmate kept driving until he landed the firetruck in a ditch, totaling the vehicle. The incident is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office and Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. According to KTVU TV, the inmate had to be hospitalized after the incident for injuries sustained during the incident. KCRA-3 shared the video of the incident on their website.
