A rolling series of earthquakes struck portions of California and Nevada this afternoon. The U.S. Geological Survey reports a 5.9 magnitude quake hit near Smith Valley, Nevada located in rural Lyon County along the California border. Another 4.8 magnitude quake was reported near Farmington, California in San Joaquin County but has since been dropped from the USGS map of earthquakes. The USGS is now reporting a series of quakes surrounding the Smith Valley epicenter. The vibrations were strong enough to rock high-rise office buildings in Sacramento.
