Amtrak has announced a $3.4 billion deal with the Sacramento-based company Siemens Mobility Inc.
Amtrak will start out by buying 73 state-of-the-art trains from Siemens Mobility, with the option to buy ten more at a later date. CBS San Francisco reports that Amtrak said Wednesday that under the contract with German manufacturer Siemens AG, some of the trains will be hybrids, able to operate on diesel fuel and electricity where wires are available. The new trains will replace Amfleet, Metroliner and state-owned equipment starting in 2024.
The contract will include equipment and a long-term parts supply and service agreement, the statement says.
