Rain and snow are in the forecast from the valley to the high country here in Northern California starting later today.

The National Weather Service’s Sacramento office forecast widespread rain accompanied by gusty winds starting midday today (Monday) and lasting into Tuesday morning. Forecasters say up to eight inches of rain is possible by Tuesday evening.“Looks like NorCal will see a break from wet weather today and into at least midday Monday,” weather service meteorologists wrote in a Sunday morning forecast discussion. “Attention then turns to a wetter system later Monday into Tuesday that will feature rain, snow, and wind.”

Sunday will see some clearing before a new system moves in on Monday. Early forecasts had suggested a potentially impactful atmospheric river arriving in Northern California possibly as early as late Sunday, but modeling has since predicted most of the moisture will shift north into the Pacific Northwest.
