EDD Suspends Over 300,000 Disability Claims Over Fraud Suspicions

Identity theft and disability fraud are on the rise in California. The Employment Development Department recently had to suspend 345,000 disability claims to confirm they are real. The pause in payments is affecting many who have a legitimate disability and need financial assistance. EDD says the level of fraud is complex because scammers posing as doctors are filing claims using stolen identities. To identify real claims from fraudulent ones, EDD has to verify the accounts of 27,000 medical offices and work with individuals whose identities were stolen.
