Celebrate the Summer Solstice at The Powerhouse Science Center

Powerhouse Science Center Celebrates International SUNday June 22-23

WHAT: In honor of the summer solstice occurring on June 21 Powerhouse Science Center is partnering with the Sacramento Valley Astronomical Society (SVAS) to celebrate International SUNday. Activities included with admission:

·Solar telescopes:SVAS will be on the Powerhouse grounds with theirhydrogen alpha scopes that allow visitors to see the sun directly, showing spots and prominences.Talk to SVAS about telescopes, backyard astronomy, and community viewing opportunities.

·Planetarium Shows:Sun-themed planetarium shows at 1pm and 3pm for ages 4 and older.

·UV Bead Bracelets:Visitors can make a bracelet using special UV beads thatchange colors when they are exposed to the invisible UV rays from the sun.

WHO:  Representatives from Powerhouse Education staff and Sacramento Valley Astronomical Society will be available for interviews.

WHY:      International SUNday is a holiday that celebrates the nearest star in our universe. Powerhouse invites visitors to come and learn more about the science behind this important star and how its energy benefits us here on earth.
