KAISER PERMANENTE AWARDS NEARLY TWO MILLION DOLLARS IN GRANTS TO SACRAMENTO-AREA NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS

Grants support access to care, healthy eating and active living, community and family safety, and mental health services.

Kaiser Permanente has awarded $1.8 million in grants to 61 local nonprofit organizations that improve the health of under-served communities throughout greater Sacramento.

Community Benefit grants are awarded every year to local organizations working on specific programs and projects that align with Kaiser Permanente’s mission and goals. Funding priorities are informed by the tri-annualCommunity Health Needs Assessment.

All the grants help fund projects in the following categories:

  • Access to care and coverage
  • Community and family safety
  • Mental health and wellness
  • Healthy Eating Active Living

The grant recipients includelocal non-profits, public health agencies, school districts, and service organizations.

Here are some highlights:

ReIMAGINE Mack Road in South Sacramento received a grant for its ReVITALIZE Community C.A.R.E. Project. Funds will support the Mack Road Valley Hi Community Center, provide afterschool programs in a safe place for kids, youth mentoring, promoting conflict mediation and youth engagement. The grant also supports the Valley Mack Farmers Market held weekly through the summer.

“Funding support from Kaiser Permanente means lives change in the best ways, where grant funding meets vital afterschool and violence reduction programming for at-risk youth and low-income families in the Valley-Mack neighborhood of South Sacramento,” said Bill Knowlton, Executive Director of the Mack Road Partnership. “The partnership and collaborative efforts among Kaiser Permanente, the Mack Road Partnership, and ReIMAGINE Mack Road Foundation generates opportunity to serve our community with high quality programs, establish safe community environments, and pursue economic growth through supported, youth-workforce development efforts.”

In Roseville, the Latino Leadership Council received a grant for CREER En Tu Salud, which is a health navigation program for Spanish-speaking and underinsured adults. Promotores meet with families at home or community events during the evenings and weekends to conduct assessments and provide linkages to health care services and supports.

“The Community Benefits grant not only creates access, so our communities meet their short-term healthcare needs, but it also supports our promotores to educate and build the capacity of our Latino populations for their overall wellness. Kaiser Permanente has been a great supporter and partner and we greatly appreciate them,” said Elisa Herrera, Executive Director, Latino Leadership Council, Inc.

In Sacramento, Juma Ventures received a grant for its Juma YouthConnect program which it will use to recruit and serve 120 youth and provide them with employment, job training, and education opportunities. The program will also provide teenagers with workshops on financial literacy.

"Funding support from Kaiser Permanente has been instrumental in helping our team achieve our mission: to break the cycle of poverty by paving the way to work, education, and financial capability for youth,” said Stephen Norris, development director for Juma Ventures in Sacramento. “Kaiser Permanente's support goes far beyond funding, helping Juma get connected to great community partners, providing engaged team member volunteers, and much, much more. Thank you, Kaiser Permanente."

Those are just a few examples of the work going on in the community that the grants support.
