Listen to the iHeart interview: Alison Parks, Visitor Services Supervisor for California State Parks
California State Parks, Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park (SHP) and Friends of Sutter’s Fort are proud to present an enchanting evening of Candlelight Tours on Saturday, November 16, 2019. With all modern lights turned off and the iconic Fort lit by candlelight, guides will lead small groups of visitors into the Fort’s more intimate rooms for intriguing glimpses into the private lives of those who uprooted their families for a better life in early California.
Once a year, the popular Sutter’s Fort Candlelight Tours offer a unique experience for visitors to “eavesdrop” on inhabitants of Fort rooms as they gossip about their neighbors and comment on the current events of the 1840s. A behind-the-scenes experience awaits Fort guests as they see the faces of those who saw opportunity or possible devastation in their new homes and listen to people discuss uncertain times as California was on the cusp of tremendous change – war, the Bear Flag revolt, travelers lost in the snow – all while being surrounded by the dark of night. At the end of the intriguing tour, guests will receive a souvenir plus enjoy dessert and hot beverage.
With tours departing every 10 minutes between 6:30 and 8 p.m. (rain or shine), Candlelight Tours cost $20 per person and are recommended for ages 9 and above. Due to the popularity of the Candlelight Tours, advance reservations are recommended and can be purchased online beginning October 16 at https://suttersfort.org/event/candlelight-tours-2019/.
