Sutter Middle School in Folsom Hosts NorCal Competition this Saturday.

2019 First Place Team from Gratton School in Denair, CA.

Listen: Laura Lorenzo, Director and Regional Coordinator for the Northern California Future City Region.

Laura Lorenzo

Future City is an international, project-based learning program where middle school students imagine, research, design and build cities at least 100 years into the future. Students work with an educator and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) mentor to create cities that incorporate the team's solution to a citywide sustainability issue. We’re celebrating our 29th year and have a different challenge each year. This year’s challenge is “Clean Water: Tap Into Tomorrow”. Teams choose a threat to their city’s water supply and design a resilient system to maintain a reliable supply of clean drinking water. We’re looking forward to seeing what innovative ideas our young participants have envisioned, especially given the relevance of this topic in recent events around the world.

Northern California is one of the few regions nationwide that does not charge a fee for students to participate. We believe every child, regardless of socio-economic background, should have the opportunity to participate in a STEM program and realize that a career in engineering, science or project management is within their reach. Our program is run entirely on the donations from our supporters. We are a 501c3 program which means you may be entitled to claim sponsorships or donations for tax purposes. It costs approximately $50 per participant to host this remarkable event. donations@norcalfuturecity.org

The NorCal Competition is being held at Sutter Middle School in Folsom this Saturday. 31 teams from across Northern California are bringing models of their city and present in front of a panel of judges. The teams have already been judged on pre-deliverables: essays, virtual city design and a project plan. The 5 teams with the highest scores advance to the final round where they present their future city concept to judges and the audience. The team with the top score advances to the Future City International finals in Washington D.C. next month. Travel and accommodations for 5 team members is fully paid by Future City. The 1st place team receives $7500 for their organization and a trip to US Space Camp!
