A New York Times report this week says that in the early days of the pandemic, agents from China spread fake text messages and promoted false social media posts that warned the Trump administration was about to lock down the entire country. One message claiming to be from the Department of Homeland Security said that DHS would “announce this as soon as they have troops in place to help prevent looters and rioters.” Another: “He said he got the call last night and was told to pack and be prepared for the call today with his dispatch orders.” John talks about how China, Russia and other nations may be using a number of platforms to spread disinformation during the pandemic.
