New Recycling Law Coming Soon: No More Throwing Food Waste in the Garbage

Listen: Jesa David, Media and Communication Specialist for the Recycling and Solid Waste Division

Come next year you'll have to throw your food scraps and food-soiled paper into the greenwaste bin, not the garbage. SB 1383 regulations are to go into effect on January 1, 2022 and will be implemented in Sacramento later in the year. The regulations aims to divert 50% of organic waste from landfills below 2014 levels by 2020 and 75% by 2025. CalRecycle is implementing the regulations and has established an additional target that not less than 20% of currently disposed edible food is recovered for human consumption by 2025.
